With Christmas just around the corner, there’s always one item on our holiday list that we closely associate with the season and that consistently appears on our festive table. Of course, I’m referring to Port.
When most people think of Port, their minds tend to go straight to Bottle Vintage Ruby or the rich, matured flavours of aged Tawny. These classic varieties have long been staples on festive tables, celebrated for their depth and tradition. However, tucked away amidst these popular choices is a “hidden gem” just waiting to be discovered: White Port.
White Port is an incredibly delicious and surprisingly versatile option. Its unique character makes it a perfect alternative for those seeking something different that can satisfy a variety of tastes. If you give White Port a chance, it’s likely you’ll quickly fall in love with its distinctive qualities and the way it complements any festive gathering.
The preferred choice at The Naked Grape is Pocas White Porto (£18.99). Produced in the northern region of Portugal’s Douro Valley, this port is crafted exclusively from indigenous grape varieties including Malvasia Fina, Códega, Rabigato, and Viosinho. Grapes are harvested by hand and undergo fermentation to transform sugar into alcohol. During this process, brandy is introduced to preserve elevated sugar levels and fortify the wine. It is subsequently aged in wooden casks for three years.
In the glass, this port displays a deep yellow hue. The nose reveals enticing aromas of sweet apricot, toasted almonds, and honey, complemented by subtle herbal undertones. The palate is full-bodied, leading to a floral yet refreshingly clean finish.
Pocas White port pairs well with a variety of both savoury and sweet accompaniments. It enhances the flavours of several cheeses particularly blue, goat, and aged cheese. Additionally, white port makes an excellent companion to lemon-based desserts, white chocolate, and strawberries, and is well suited to be enjoyed alongside almonds and cashews.
It can be served neat or over ice based on personal preference, but we especially suggest trying the Portuguese Porto Tonico - a refreshing and distinctive cocktail that's a great celebratory alternative to serve with your canapés, aperitifs, and platters.
The recipe is simple and uses few ingredients.
Ingredients:
§ 50 ml Pocas White Port
§ 100 ml tonic water
§ Rosemary
§ Lemon slices
Method:
Pour white port over ice in a tall glass, add tonic water, then garnish with rosemary or lemon slices.
Enjoy!
Whatever your preferred holiday beverage, we hope you enjoy our recommendations and discover wonderful new flavours. On behalf of everyone at The Naked Grape, we raise a glass to thank you and extend our warmest wishes for a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
